Long-term blood pressure measurement / Holter ECG

According to the RKI, every third adult in Germany suffers from diagnosed high blood pressure. With this prevalence, arterial hypertension is the number one widespread disease. The gold standard for diagnosing high blood pressure is still the invasive procedure, followed by cuff-based ambulatory devices. However, these only measure blood pressure selectively and not continuously, i.e. you only get a snapshot without taking into account the patient's current situation - for example, whether they have just climbed the stairs or are resting after a walk. And even at night, these values are not comprehensively meaningful, as the patient almost always has a wake-up reaction when the cuff is inflated, which is followed by a rise in blood pressure. Based on this realization and the increasing importance of nocturnal blood pressure as an indicator of cardiovascular disease, we have developed a patented algorithm that enables us to determine blood pressure continuously, non-reactive and non-invasively, even over 24 hours. In addition, the events or increases and decreases in blood pressure are correlated based on the recording of additional parameters such as body position, thus enabling a detailed and comprehensive diagnosis.

The PTT is the time required for the pulse wave to propagate along the vessel wall between two defined points. In the case of the SOMNOtouch NIBP – from the left ventricle of the heart (defined by the ´R´peak ofthe ECG) – to the fingertip (detected by the plethysmograph). Taking a one point calibration at the beginning of the measurement allows us to `set` the software‘s algorithm – and measure blood pressure continuously throughout the day and night. Because every single pulse wave is detected, a continuous “Beat-to-Beat”- recording and analysis is possible.
